In today’s Advent meditation, we’re looking at part of the promise from God to Abraham from Genesis chapter 22, verse 18. "And in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice."

This is about Jesus. God said to Abraham, back all those thousands of years ago, all nations on earth, not just the Israelite nation, all nations, not just the ones that directly flowed from Abraham’s lineage, all of us, Gentiles and Jews alike, were going to be blessed by the offspring of Abraham.

And God knew, so many years in advance, as He always does, that He would send that blessing in the Messiah. And this is one of the reasons why devout Jews were looking and still look today for the Messiah who comes from God.

And this happened because Abraham was obedient. He listened to God. He trusted God. He obeyed Him. He obeyed Him to the point of being willing to surrender the son through whom this promise he thought was going to be fulfilled. That’s incredibly challenging to us, isn’t it?

But let us look to that God, who has such strength of character, such foresight, that he can create this promise and fulfil it through time and keep on fulfilling it because the blessings that we receive through the Messiah, through Jesus continue now and through eternity.

And so as we look towards this time where we celebrate the birth of Christ, let us thank God for the promise that he made so long before Jesus came to the earth and he then fulfilled to bless us all.

Thank you, God for what you said to Abraham. Thank you that it affected Abraham’s life and it affects our lives. Thank you that you had us in mind when you decided that you were going to bless the earth in this way. Thank you for Jesus. Amen.
