Again, for Advent, we’re meditating on part of the story of the angel’s revelation to the shepherds in Luke chapter 2, verses 13 to 14. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased."
This is an angelic army. These are messengers from God in a mighty throng. Many of them face to face with these shepherds, and they are, I imagine, singing or chanting loudly, "Glory to God in the highest!" that is their worship, and they are leading us in worship.
And then they say, "And on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased." The worship is followed by a blessing, and we benefit from that blessing.
Can you imagine what it might have been like to see all of these angelic messengers singing God’s praises and then pronouncing peace, pronouncing a blessing, even saying this remarkable thing that God can be pleased with us.
Right at that moment, the shepherds would not have known how it was possible for God to be pleased with them. But Jesus was to come and show us the way, and in fact make the way, for us to be at peace with God.
The angels must have been utterly amazed when God told them what he was going to do, and he sent them to send this message. This is one of those mysteries into which angels wish to look so that they can understand the workings of God.
And we should look into this mystery too. How is it possible that through this birth of a child, we can find our way to worship, we can find our way to peace, and we can find our way to favour with God?
Thank you, God, for this glorious, angelic announcement that you’ve preserved for us in the pages of the Bible. Thank you that it shows us your heart towards us. It shows us that you are worthy of worship. And it shows us that you want to be reconciled with the people on this planet who you’ve created for your pleasure. Amen.
