Yesterday we meditated on an ancient prophecy from Jeremiah about Jesus’s eternal kingship. Today we look at a slightly more recent prophecy, this given by the angel to Mary.
It’s Luke chapter one, verses 32 to 33. "He will be great and will be called the son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. And of his kingdom there will be no end."
Lest there be any doubt who Jeremiah and all the other ancient prophets were referring to, this categorically tells us that the son of Mary is going to be this eternal King. I wonder how Mary thought of this. How is it possible that her son would become a King with an unending kingdom? And yet she trusted God.
But we now see more clearly what happens when Jesus arrives in great humility, lays down his life, and thus becomes the Eternal King. And he is the Eternal King, who is the Son of the Most High. It isn’t possible for your parentage to be any better than that. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and because of this, it perhaps makes more sense why He would be an everlasting King.
He is a King, though, from the line of faithful David, the King who was frequently described as a man after God’s own heart, as is Jesus, always seeking to do His Father’s will, despite being God Himself. And this humble, gracious Shepherd becomes our King forever.
Lord God, we thank you for our always King, Jesus, son of David, Jesus, our Lord God, Jesus the baby, Jesus the man, Jesus enthroned in heaven. Amen.
