Anxiety may be widespread, but it’s not a modern phenomenon. Jesus knew about it when he was speaking thousands of years ago. And he speaks to us kindly in Matthew chapter 6, verse 34. "Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."

Now, we can’t remove anxiety just by deciding not to be anxious. But before this point in Matthew 6, 34, Jesus has been talking about all the provision that God makes for us, that He clothes us, He feeds us, He puts us in a family.

And further, if you think about things like the Lord’s Prayer, we are invited to ask God to give us today our daily bread, so that we walk with Him day by day, asking Him for what we need. Not worrying about tomorrow, not worrying about all the plans that we might have for the future. But taking one day at a time.

Don’t worry about tomorrow, Jesus says. Let’s focus on the now. Let’s get you through this day. One step at a time. Holding my hand. Being guided by me and my Word. Being dependent on me.

Because I want you to depend on me, says God. He is the source of everything that we have. There’s no possible way we can be independent of God.

Therefore, let us not worry because we are provided for by a kind Father. Even though, sometimes in a way we can’t understand, He lets us go through hardship, trials, shortage. Even in those times, we can know that He loves us, and He doesn’t want us to worry, because in the end, everything will be okay.

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for this reminder. Please help us when we face anxiety, when we face troubles and things that are difficult for us. Lord, we do want to rely on You. We know that your yoke is strong. is easy and your burden light. So we choose to hold your hand and to walk with you today. Amen.
