We’ve got a proper Christmassy passage to meditate on today, but please don’t switch off just because it’s familiar. Matthew chapter 2, verses 1 to 2. Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born King of the Jews, for we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him."

Look what we’ve got here. We’ve got these mysterious men who’ve come from the East and therefore, they’re not Jews, are they? These are people to whom some kind of revelation has come that an important king was arriving and all they knew about it was that they should go and see him, pay homage to him. Because by whatever method they came to this conclusion that he was arriving, they knew that arrival was important, worth noticing.

And we can see here by some mysterious means, God has made it clear that Jesus isn’t only for the nation of Israel, Jesus is coming for all. And so, those wise men, who were indeed wise, did what we should all do. We should seek the King of the Jews, the once for all King, the King Jesus, who will remain King for all eternity, who is then King not only of the Jews, but of all peoples.

And like these wise men, we should go and seek out that King and worship him. Fortunately, unlike these wise men, we don’t have to set out on some long journey. We can worship him here and now, wherever we are.

So let’s do that. Lord Jesus, thank you for coming. Thank you for coming in such a way that it was clear you were to be King of all. And we now worship you as our king. Please stay close to us this Advent, throughout the coming year, and for always. Amen.
