Today we have another classic Nativity verse to meditate on during Advent. It’s Matthew chapter 2, verse 11. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
And in meditation, we may ask, how does this verse apply to us? Clearly, we are receiving information about this incredible Child who was worthy of worship, who was worthy of being presented these expensive, and in one case, quite unique gifts. But how does that apply to us right now?
Jesus is our King and our God. And so when we come to Him, we worship Him. But we do more than that. We give Him our treasure.
What is it in your life that you are holding on to so tightly, you would not give it up to anyone? Will you, my friends, give Jesus your treasure?
What have you ring fenced and said, no, this is just for me? God is a jealous God, and He won’t let us have priorities that are higher than His priorities. And we can rest assured that this is for our good, and for His glory, which is also for our good.
But will we be like those wise men, taking out of our cupboards, out of our closets, out of our lives, the things that we value highly, and surrender them to him?
Whether this be material goods, wealth, or particular time that we’ve set aside to pursue our own goals, whether it might be key relationships, let us set all these things down before our God and say, Lord, use them as you will, because we worship you. And all that we have is from you and for you.
