Quite a lot of the Bible seems to be devoted to reminding believers how they should treat one another. Why do you suppose that is?

Let’s look today at Colossians chapter 3 verse 15. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts to which indeed you were called in one body and be thankful.

The Apostle Paul wants the peace of Christ, so that is the state of being in harmonious relationship with God and with each other, to be a ruling principle in our hearts. So that when we interact with our brothers and sisters in Christ, if we have any friction or disagreement, our first thought is not to defend our rights, or not even to start arguing about our own particular understanding of Scripture, it is to be the principle of peace.

How do we move towards peace with our brothers and sisters? This verse is in the middle of an impassioned dialogue where Paul is asking for us to be motivated by love towards one another.

He says that we were called to this as one body. We are knit together in such close relationship that we are at peace, that we are working as one towards one goal.

If we look around at the people that we see in our churches, in our congregations, there are a lot of people here that we wouldn’t naturally get along with. And yet we’re called together. And that is the miracle of the peace of Christ. That we can be united with people who are so different, who think differently, who hold different opinions, who vote for different political parties. Who support different sports teams. We are at peace with them.

Lord God, please help us to know when exactly we should let the peace of Christ be the foremost principle guiding our interactions with other believers, and when indeed it is more appropriate to bring loving correction. Thank you, God, that you have brought peace to us so that we are no longer out of fellowship with you, our God. Amen.
