During Advent it’s great to look at some of the human origin story of Jesus because that’s what Advent is all about. And that includes how Jesus fulfilled lots of prophecies as we’ve been seeing over previous meditations.

Today we look at another prophecy. It’s Jeremiah chapter 33 verse 17. "For thus says the Lord, David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel."

How is it possible for such a prophecy to be fulfilled completely? What are the chances that a king would always be on the throne of Israel, descended from David?

There was a real clue in this prophecy that the King would have to be a king in the infinite sense. Once a king, always a king. Those reading this prophecy had a clue about what Messiah could be, but until Jesus arrived, we didn’t see the fullness of that.

The king descended from David was, of course, Jesus. And David will never lack having a man on the throne of Israel because Jesus becomes King once and forever. Jesus died and then was resurrected. He now sits on the greatest throne of all at the right hand of God the Father.

And so there really was only one person who was ever going to fulfil this prophecy completely. There are no human kings sitting on the physical throne of Israel now. It has to be Jesus. He is our King forever.

And so at Christmas once more we welcome the coming of the baby who was to become that King. Jesus Christ. Messiah, King, Prophet, Priest, Friend, Brother, Saviour.

Lord God, thank you for all these prophecies that you gave. Thank you because they help us to believe when we struggle with doubt. You told us what was going to happen even though we didn’t fully understand. And now we see, maybe only dimly, but we see the work that you have done and continue to do in the person of Jesus , the blessed second Person of the Trinity. We praise you. Amen.
