Our Advent series continues with this wonderful promise from Jeremiah. Jeremiah chapter 33 verses 14 to 15. Behold the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous branch to spring up for David and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
This makes me think about King David who was the archetypal righteous king. Now David did a lot of things wrong that the Bible doesn’t approve of, like the multiplicity of wives and concubines, but nevertheless he’s often described as a man after God’s heart, passionate for God. And God, in his grace, makes this incredible promise to David that he will always have someone sitting on the throne.
And so in Jeremiah, we see this promise once again being recapitulated. We are going to have somebody springing from the line of David who will bring justice and righteousness and who will fulfil the promise made to Israel.
And we now know that this is the Messiah who came. This is Jesus. He is the fulfilment of this and many other prophecies as we’ll see over this time of Advent.
God, of course, knew what he was doing and he chose to bless us through this line of David all the way to Jesus Christ. And His justice and righteousness shall be known throughout all the earth.
Lord God, we await eagerly for the second coming of Jesus. We await the final commencement of His reign over the whole created order. God, thank you for these promises and thank you that you always fulfil your promises. Amen.
