Again, in this advent time, we’re going to meditate on a wonderful prophecy about the coming of Jesus. This is from Zechariah, chapter 9, verse 9. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your king is coming to you. Righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

If you know the Gospels well, you’ll know that at one point Jesus does indeed enter Jerusalem riding on a donkey, very clearly fulfilling this prophecy from so many hundreds of years before when Zechariah spoke and wrote these words.

And the reaction that’s expected from Jerusalem and ultimately from the world is to rejoice, to shout with joy. And that’s what they did in Jerusalem when Jesus arrived on his donkey. But they missed some of the more important points of this prophecy.

Jesus was coming with righteousness, with salvation, and in humility. They didn’t expect their King to die so soon, so suddenly. They didn’t expect that the one that they would welcome into Jerusalem, they would so quickly reject as their King.

But we all have this opportunity to say, yes, Jesus, we see you coming in your humility. We accept your salvation. Thank you for coming as a humble King, rather than as one that lords it over us, that oppresses us. You come with kindness, with love, with mercy. Let us praise God for these facts and for the fulfillment of this prophecy by Jesus, our Messiah.

Thank you, God, that you turned the tables. People were expecting one thing, but they received another, and the other that we receive is far better than our expectations ever could have been. Thank you for the peace and righteousness that Jesus brings, and thank you that we are able to enter into the salvation that he offers. Amen.
