It’s Advent, so for the next 25 days we are going to focus on the coming of our Lord, starting with meditating on Micah chapter 5, verse 2. But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

Isn’t this just like God? We see constantly He takes the least and makes them the greatest. So we have this tiny town, Bethlehem, which is too little even to be among the clans of Judah. From that town is going to come forth someone unexpectedly from such a lowly place who will be the ruler in Israel.

Of course, we know another reversal is coming, that when Jesus arrives in Israel, he’s not going to be the ruler they expect. He’s going to be the ruler they need.

And we can see that God has planned this from right before time began. His coming forth is from of old. God always knew that Jesus would be necessary. God always knew it was part of his plan. He knew that we would fall. And it was part of his plan that he would save us from ourselves by sending his Son.

What wonderful insights we get from God in this Messianic prophecy that was delivered way before Jesus came to earth. It is one of many prophecies fulfiled by our Lord and Saviour.

Jesus Christ, we praise you. We thank you for this time when we are able to focus on all that went into bringing you to earth so you could rescue us. Please give us your peace as we meditate on you and your greatness from such apparent humble beginnings. Amen.
