Part of the glory of Advent was that so much prophecy was fulfilled by that coming Messiah, Jesus, including this verse from a famous messianic prophecy in Isaiah. This is Isaiah chapter 9, verse 2. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them light has shone.
And in the way Isaiah casts this prophecy, in the past tense, he’s seeing what’s happened to the people who have seen the Messiah revealed. And he sees people who’ve formerly had no light. They’ve been in sin and darkness and despair and decay.
And on them, in this land of deep darkness, of great sinfulness, of great misery and shame, on them, this light has shone. The glory of Jesus Christ is revealed to those who are in the blackest of blackest situations.
Jesus comes bringing light, bringing truth, bringing life, bringing holiness. Bringing righteousness to all of those who will look on him and say, Yes, Lord, thank you. I am going your way. I love you. I accept you as my Saviour. I can’t imagine what it was like for Isaiah to see all of this so long before it happened.
But for us, we can stand back and marvel so many years after it happened that Isaiah foresaw this through the revelation brought by the Spirit of God. And we now live in the benefit, in the blessing of that light that shone all those years ago when Jesus came to earth as a baby, lived as a man, and died for us on the cross.
Thank you Lord God that this is the true message of Christmas, that we are brought out of darkness into light, out of sin and death, into life and holiness. We thank you for Jesus. Amen.
