Our penultimate Advent meditation is just a short verse, but there’s so much in it, it’s potent. Colossians chapter 1, verse 19: For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.
In him, in Christ, all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. In this very short sentence, Paul is making the point that Christ was full of God.
What does that mean? Every single aspect and character of God is present in Jesus Christ, because he is God.
Though he was human, he was fully God. As much God as anybody ever could be. And of course, only God can be God.
Now, we’re not going to dwell on the mysteries of the Trinity right now. But let us soak in, let us bathe in that incredible concept that this baby, who arrives in such humble circumstances, is 100 percent God.
This is the Being through whom the entire universe was created. No wonder the wise men, and the shepherds, and who knows who else came to worship, came to worship a baby, came to worship a small child. This was no mere small child. This was God. This was our Saviour.
Lord God, again, we marvel at this. We marvel at this picture. We marvel that somehow you could package yourself, your entire self as God into a frail human frame. We’d say this was impossible, but you achieved it and we accept this truth and we acknowledge Jesus as our Lord. Amen.
