Today’s meditation verse is one of those verses that could strike you as offensive if you try and take it out of its cultural historical context. But it has a valid principle for us to meditate on and that’s why we’re going to meditate on it today. It’s Proverbs 11 verse 22. Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman without discretion.

Now this verse is not bashing on women at all. It’s calling for consistency. Consistency of character.

There’s something discordant here, isn’t there? Putting a gold ring in the snout of a pig is not going to increase the value of the pig.

So the writer of Proverbs wants us to be of good character. And I like to reference this with 1 Peter 3, where Peter talks about how our adornment shouldn’t be just external, it should be internal. So that we are at least as much focused on what’s going on inside us in terms of our knowledge, our character, our pursuit of righteousness and holiness as there is on anything that we do externally.

So the writer of Proverbs then is calling for discretion. That’s the bottom line, isn’t it? What does discretion mean?

It means we’re not simply spewing forth everything that we think without any filter. It means that we are being careful in how we interact with people, how we deal with people.

We are not revealing secrets that have been entrusted to us. We’re not exposing people. We’re not shaming people. We are being wise in all our dealings.

And if we want to acquire wisdom, then we know where to start. Start by reading the Bible and by treating God with the reverence fear that He is entitled to.

So a little bit of a different verse for us to meditate on today, but I think it’s worthwhile just as with any verse of scripture. God is speaking to us through this. What is he saying to you today? I’d love it if you’d let me know in the comments.
