Does the Bible really say that makeup and jewellery are sinful? See what you think. 1 Peter chapter 3 verse 3. Do not let your adorning be external, the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewellery or the clothing you wear.
What is Peter meaning to convey when he says this? Don’t let your adorning be external.
So clearly he’s implying that the adorning should be internal, shouldn’t it? And we will look at that in tomorrow’s meditation, which is on the next verse.
But let’s focus on this verse. Our adorning is not to be external. That means making ourselves look nicer. We don’t do that by arranging our hair nicely, by putting on expensive jewellery, by wearing the best clothing. That’s not the way we adorn ourselves.
Peter isn’t saying here that any of those things are wrong. He’s saying that this isn’t where we find our value. Because when we adorn something we increase its value. We can’t possibly increase our value by making ourselves look nice.
In Ecclesiastes it says, He has made everything beautiful in its time. You, my friend, are God’s handiwork, and He has made you beautiful as you are. You do not need to have an expensive haircut. You do not need expensive jewellery. You do not need the finest clothing to be beautiful. You are beautiful because you are a child of God. There is no need to adorn ourselves in order to be more attractive.
I recommend meditating on this verse, which you’ll find in the description, and asking God how, exactly how, do I apply this to my life? And are there any changes that I need to make? May God bless you as you spend time in His Word, listening to the Holy Spirit.
