When the Lord’s Supper, Communion, the Eucharist, whatever you choose to call it, is so familiar, it is easy for us to forget its significance. Let’s meditate today on 1 Corinthians chapter 10, verse 16, and marvel at its significance. Paul says this: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?

Paul is talking about something that we rightly call communion, close fellowship, intimacy in all the right ways. We are partaking in the blood of Christ. This blood gives us righteousness. This blood covers our sins. This blood brings life.

And we’re participating in his body. We are the body of Christ, the church. We are the hands and feet, effectively, of God on this earth.

And in this special sacred meal, we are once again reminded of these incredible facts. The life of God has been given to us, and we now go into the world and minister to those around us.

Lord, we thank you that you gave us this institution of communion. We thank you that you imparted it with great significance for us, as a reminder of all that you’ve done for us, and as a reminder of all that we are to do for the world. Thank you for sharing yourself with us so completely, so freely. May we never participate in this meal in an unworthy manner. Amen.
