King David knew a thing or two about meditation and we can take this verse today as his recommendation for how we approach it. Psalm chapter 19 verse 14. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight O Lord my Rock and Redeemer.

There’s a lot in this verse. He’s starting from a place of submission to God. He’s saying God, the words that I’m going to speak now, and as I meditate on you internally in my heart, I want that process to be to your liking.

You’re my King, you’re my God. In you I place my hope and my trust. You are the one who saves me. Therefore, what I return to you, I want it to be acceptable to you.

And if we take that approach in our meditation, we know then that the reason why we’re meditating is because of God. Not because of what we will get out of it.

And that’s really important, isn’t it? In our entire Christian journey, we are in this as children and servants of God. Our entire focus is towards Him and on Him.

We want to please him. So even when we are meditating on the words that he’s given us, even in that process, we want that process to be pleasing. We don’t want to be coming to the Word of God with arrogance or preconceptions or selfish desire in our hearts. We need to be giving and receiving in the way that God wants us to.

So you can use this Psalm as a prayer as you begin meditating if you like. It certainly gives us a strong recommendation for the attitude we should adopt when we are meditating. Let’s pray this together.

Lord God, let the words of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen.
