We have a lovely piece of wisdom from Paul in 1 Corinthians 6 verse 12. He says, All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything.

Recognising the grace that we’ve received, we aren’t going to just carry on and do any old thing that we want to. Not all things are helpful. Anything that would be classed as sin is unhelpful for us and it’s unhelpful for others.

And he also says, we don’t want to be under subjection to anything. I’m not going to be dominated by anything, he says. Because some sins are addictive and they cause domination in your life. Some sins are so overpowering, they change our character for the worse.

Yes, we know that sin no longer has dominion over us. We are set free. But we’re not going to descend into licentiousness. We’re not going to just do whatever we want. Because some things are harmful, some things will cripple us. Some things will destroy our relationship. They will harm friendships.

And most of all, these things that God dislikes, they don’t honour Him. They harm our relationship with Him.

We need to be going back to Him saying, Lord, the things I’ve done, I’m sorry for what they’re doing to our relationship. As far as God’s concerned, there’s no problem, we’re forgiven. But as far as we’re concerned, we allow this sin to come between us when we choose these things rather than God.

Fortunately, the cure for all of this is fairly easy, we just repent again. We keep doing that daily, every time we stumble and fall. But there is no condemnation for any of this.

And God looks on us with love, even as we sin. Can you believe that? The power of the cross is so immense that it’s paid for the sins that we haven’t yet committed. God knowing what we were going to do has still forgiven us, already.

So let’s take on board Paul’s wisdom and continue to flee from sin, not letting it master us, not letting it dominate us, not letting it harm us or others, whilst we continue to rest in the grace of God.

I hope this is a blessing for you today.
