There’s a problem with today’s meditation verse, and that’s if we apply it to ourselves, if we pray it as a prayer, it demands a lot of us. Psalm chapter 40, verse 8, David is saying this: "I delight to do your will, O my God. Your law is within my heart."
Now I think actually the second part of this Psalm isn’t too difficult or challenging because God himself says he’ll write his law on our hearts. So that bit’s done.
But the first bit, the delighting to do his will, oh my friends, how often do we fall short of that? Do we always delight to do God’s will? Do we always know what his will is? Are we seeking his will? Are we asking him, God, what shall I do with my life, with my time, with my resources that you’ve given to me? Do we delight to do God’s will?
If we make God the source of all authority in our life, then we have to lay down our own hopes, dreams, desires, plans, and say, God, how would you work in my life? Help me to direct my steps in accordance with your will.
And not only that, not are we saying we are going to follow your will, God, we’re saying we’ll do it with delight. How do we get there, my friends? Only by getting to know our God better. And one way is to meditate on His law, which we have in the Bible, as revealed to us, as explained to us by the Holy Spirit living within us, and by the testimony of the Apostles, and by all those godly men and women who have been sent by God to teach us.
Get to know God’s will, and then delight in it, and pursue it, with all your heart. For this is the best possible purpose you can put your life to. Let’s serve Him with our whole hearts.
