Entropy is that concept that everything is tending towards randomness, we are losing energy, the world is decaying. We find this concept in physics, but we also find it in the Bible. 1 John chapter 2 verse 17. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
One of the implications of the Fall is that stuff is degrading. Our bodies degrade. Our food, if we don’t eat it, rots. This world is perishing, it’s passing away. Quite literally, it’s going wrong on us, beneath our feet. And this is because we right at the start said to God, we want to do it our way, not your way.
So John notes this. But he notes it with joy, because although this world is passing away, that means we are losing with it decay, we are losing unrighteousness, we are losing sin and death and destruction. Because whoever does the will of God, and that’s us who have chosen to go the way of Jesus, abides forever.
We will live forever. We will live forever in the newly recreated heavens and the earth in which there will be no entropy. The universe as God recreates it, free from the curse of sin, will last forever and we along with it.
Thank you God that you have everything in control. You are not concerned about decay and destruction because ultimately your way triumphs. You will bring everything back into order. You will grace us with your presence. You will shine your light in our cities and we will live with you basking in your joy and your glory and your love forever. Amen.
