Are you, my friend, taking in the nourishment that you need to survive and to thrive? Look at 1 Peter, chapter 2, verse 2. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation.

Peter here is advising his readers to get that milk. What is that milk? It is the most basic, most essential nourishment that we need as Christians.

Now let’s not confuse this with what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3 when he seems to criticise the Corinthians that they’ve not got past the milk stage onto the meat stage. This isn’t the same thing here.

Peter, it’s clear, is talking about the thing that we need right at the start to grow, but then we need throughout our lives. Pure spiritual milk, the most essential nutrition that we can need. And we need it for our spiritual health.

So what is that pure spiritual milk? It must be the words of God. It must be the doctrine that we find in the Bible. That is what we need, as if we are newborn infants, and the most important, most vital thing in our consideration is getting that milk, else we’ll die.

And that is true. If we don’t get our spiritual milk, we’ll shrivel up, we’ll be lifeless. My friends, you have joined me on this meditation today to do just that. And I say, keep doing it, and long for it, long for this time spent in God’s Word, because by it we grow up into salvation.

Thank you God that you are concerned with our spiritual health and thank you that you have given us everything we need for that health by giving us your Word and by giving us your Holy Spirit who helps us to understand your Word. We thank you. Amen.
