How often, my friends, do we get ourselves into all sorts of hot water because we’re too afraid of men, too afraid of what people think, and not sufficiently submitted to God. Proverbs 29:25 says, The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
It’s really clear, isn’t it, that when we agree to submit to God’s authority, this provides for us a haven, a place of safety. Ultimately, we bow the knee to God. It is God’s way that must prevail over all others.
If we get ourselves into a state where we’re terrified of what people think of us, terrified of what people might do to us, that dramatically influences our effectiveness as Christians.
For a long time, in my late childhood and early teenage years, I lived in fear of what people would think of me if they found out that I was a Christian. And because of that, I was completely silenced. I repent of that. God, I know, has long since forgiven me for that silence. He forgave me before I was even born.
But still, I hope that I’ve learnt this lesson that we need not be fearful of men. We need not be fearful of those who can do nothing to our immortal soul. We need to show appropriate reverence fear to God. Follow His way and find safety on that narrow path that He’s set out for us.
Father God, please help us with this. We acknowledge that you have made a safe way for us, that you protect and guard our immortal soul, that you are making a place for us where we can live with you forever. Please banish in our hearts the fear of man as we submit to your eternal authority. Amen.
