I don’t know how much justice we can do to today’s verse in two minutes, but here goes. Hebrews 8 verse 6. But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old, as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.

Christ’s ministry, Christ’s ministry to us, he becomes the most excellent minister. He is the one who stands before God mediating on our behalf, saying that whatever we do, whatever sin we may commit, we are covered by his blood.

This is so much more excellent than the previous priestly ministry, where no matter how many sacrifices they made, the Israelites were always going to blow it again and more sacrifices would be required. This ministry is much more excellent than that.

And the covenant that Christ has mediated is of course better. Because this covenant doesn’t just make us righteous, bring us into right relationship with God. It makes us children. It makes us heirs. It makes us inheritors in the kingdom of God.

And that is a far better promise for this covenant to be enacted on. The promise that we will have eternal life with our Father as his children.

You might need to ponder on this one a bit further. The verse is in the description. Let’s pray though.

Lord God, thank you for this. Thank you for the ministry of Christ towards you and for us. Thank you for the promises that Christ secured through his death on the cross. That once for all act that was far better than any priestly sacrifice before it. Father God, this is a true standard of excellence, which you have put in place for us. We are grateful. Amen.
