Psalm 30, verse 5. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favour is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

David here is doing this poetic thing where he balances two extremes. On the one hand, you’ve got God’s anger, God’s righteous anger against sin, against the unrighteous acts of humans on this planet. But on the other hand, you’ve got his favour. His favour goes on and on. The anger is brief, the favour is eternal.

And compare that with our grief. Our grief, which sometimes is so intense. It feels like we might die. But the Bible says that God is going to wipe away our tears. Joy comes with the morning. The morning of God’s pleasure. The morning of his favour. The morning where all tears are wiped away and everything is restored.

And until that day, we have these insights, don’t we, as we go through life. Times when joy comes, in spite of the grief sometimes. God’s joy is for now, as well as for later.

And meanwhile we see chaos and destruction and evil and violence on this planet. And we know that God’s anger is going to burn, is going to burn hot and fierce, and all of this will be burnt away.

But that moment will be sudden and brief. And after it God’s favour will be on us, those of us who love and accept and serve Jesus. The anger, the weeping, they are relatively brief. The favour and the joy are for always and forever.

Thank you, God, for those promises that you’ve prophesied through your servant, David. Thank you for showing to us your character, how you are so inclined to love and to nurture and to comfort. And we need that now, Lord, and we look forward to it in the life hereafter. Amen.
