For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise, the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.
And so the first half of this verse might have been very familiar and popular to the culture of the day. Yes, it was quite patriarchal and men ruled often. But the second half of this verse could have come as a surprise. It’s not just the husband having authority over his wife, it’s also his wife having authority over him.
