Some people think Christianity is a bit sexist, but Jesus in his time was a pioneer of equality. Let’s meditate today on Galatians 3 verse 28. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

This great difference that the society of the time wanted to have where the men only could go into the particular place of worship, the women had to be in the outer court, they couldn’t go and worship with the men. That was turned on its head by Jesus. The kind of things that he said, the way he reached out to the people who were marginalised by society, was offensive to those around him.

And we still have a struggle in our culture today, all around the world, between people of different races, people from different nations, people of different social classes, people of different gender. All of this, we’re saying, one’s better than the other, the other’s better than one, and Jesus says, no, nonsense to all of that. Because, before Christ Jesus, we all achieve the same status, the status first, of a sinner, who is beyond hope, and then having accepted Jesus, the status of a redeemed saint, who is completely washed and cleansed and clean in God’s eyes.

And that applies equally, regardless of your background, regardless of where you were born, regardless of your social status, regardless of how much is in your bank account, if you even have a bank account, and certainly regardless of whether you’re a man or a woman. We are all one in Christ Jesus, equal in status and value and personhood.

So if you see someone being marginalised in society or in a church because of who they are or where they’re from, challenge that behaviour, challenge it in others, and challenge it in yourself. We are all equal before God.

Thank you, God, that you show no favoritism towards us. All you ask of us is to follow your Son. And if we do, we are all accepted and acceptable. Bless your name. Amen.
