What do we do about fear? Well, King David, in Psalm 34, has an idea. This is Psalm 34, verse 4. I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
He was a man under intense persecution, and he had good reason to fear. And some of his Psalms are laments, they are pouring out his heart to God and saying, God, why are all these things happening? Why are bad men prospering, while good men seem to be suffering?
And David knew what it was to fear. But he also knew what it was to persevere seeking God. And he knew that he would be rewarded if he sought God, because God answers.
And sometimes, if we feel like God hasn’t answered us, that could be because we haven’t sought him for as long as we might. God, as a Father, wants to stretch us, and this means sometimes taking us to our limits. And at our limit, we find that we can lean on Him. And David knew this, and it was his testimony that God answered and delivered him from his fears.
Now, this is David looking back on his life, so he’s saying this from experience. This is what happened to him. This is what God has done. The best thing for us to do, by far, if we are feeling fear, is to seek the Lord, to listen for His answer, to pray for deliverance, and to trust Him.
That answer from God may come in many different forms. It may include professional support. It may include assistance from friends and family. But we know that God will deliver us from all our fear.
Thank you, God, that you are there when we seek you. Thank you that you answer us in so many ways, including through your word. And thank you for this hope that you give us, that you will deliver us from our fears. We praise your name. Amen.
