This is one of my favourite verses and I have referred back to it so many times in all the trials that I’ve been through. John 16 verse 33. This is Jesus speaking. "I have said these things to you that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world."

What a wonderful promise that is. And we think that Jesus, at this point, he was on his way to the cross. He knew what was coming. And all of the religious leaders, they were plotting against Jesus. They were trying to decide what Jesus fate would be. They wanted to see him crucified. What they didn’t realise was that their plans were being planned by God. There was a plan under their plan.

So, to the outside observer, this looked like a disaster. The future king of the world was killed by the Roman authorities. But his plan was unwavering. They were just playing part in his plan.

So when Jesus says, I have overcome the world, even before he was crucified, we see this principle in place. That his purposes, his plans, they are the ones in effect. We are all playing our part in God’s plans.

We can take heart. When things look grave and bleak, we know that Jesus has won. That victory is complete. We still live with the reality of a fallen world. But we can live in the peace that Jesus brings and promises to us. And we can take heart knowing that he’s done it. He’s overcome.

Yes, we will have trials and tribulations, but they are not fatal to us, nothing can be. Our own death is not fatal to us. Praise the name of Jesus.
