Which is more important to us? What God does for us, or what we can do for him? Listen to this, Luke 11 verse 28, But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it."

Now a woman in the crowd has just said, "Your mother, she is so blessed to have borne you." And Jesus is saying, "Hang on a minute, this is what a true blessing looks like."

It’s easy for us to think that our lives will be blessed by all the things that God’s going to do for us. He’s going to take away our pain, he’s going to give us career success, he’s going to give us a wonderful family with well adjusted children.

All of these things we say are blessings from God, and there is truth in that. But Jesus is saying that shouldn’t be your focus, not what you’re going to get.

What God is looking for is for you to hear his instruction, take it into your heart, and follow it. He wants followers, he wants disciples. Not the ones who just say with their lips, "Yes, Jesus is Lord," but rather those who show that in the way that they live their lives. Those are the people who are truly blessed.

And why is that the real blessing? If you want to live your best life, you don’t need to go on a fancy holiday. You need to do what God tells you to do. We need to be obedient. That is the path to true blessing. That is the path where we get to heaven and God says, "Well done, good and faithful servants. Now enter into your master’s joy."

This is a real challenge, isn’t it? Are we going to be those who hear the word of God and keep it? When we hear a rebuke or a change of direction being signaled, will we pay attention? That’s what God’s looking for. That’s how to be blessed.

Lord God, thank you that you pour out blessings on us. You are bountiful. You are kind and good to us. But Lord, that isn’t to be our primary motivation. We want to be people who are listening to you and doing what you tell us, to please our Father God. Amen.
