Are you ever worried or puzzled by the strong emphasis on the bible? You might find Psalm 138 verse 2 reassuring. David says this: I will bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness. For you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
David says, one of the highest principles that God observes is the importance of his own name and his word. Some people might say, to mean that they have integrity, "My word is my bond." In other words, what I say, I will do. And that’s what we have with God. We have a being whose integrity is greater than anyone else’s.
He always does what he says he will. He is true to himself and true to his word. So when we read the words of scripture, puzzling though they may be at times, what we know we’ve got here is absolute truth from the creator, the author of everything.
And David is recognising that this integrity is a beautiful characteristic in somebody he worships. He is known for his steadfast love and faithfulness. He is constant. He is always loving towards his children, even though they reject him.
And this for David and for us is a cause for worship. It is important for God to be glorified. It is important for us to treat his name, whatever we call him, with respect, whether that be Yahweh, Jehovah, God. This is a beautiful name. Jesus, that’s a beautiful name to us because of who it represents. And his word is so important. And this is why we meditate on it.
Lord God, thank you for giving us your word. Thank you that you have complete integrity. Thank you that we can trust you. We worship you, our God. Amen.
