Hebrews chapter 4 verses 9 to 10. So then there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. But whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works, as God did from his.
Now we know that Christ came to fulfil the law and because of that we are not under bondage to the law, so what does the Sabbath mean? In the book of Hebrews, the writer talks about how the Israelites entered into the Promised Land and found their rest there. They started believing in God’s promises and that’s how they found their rest.
We enter into God’s rest by believing in God and by resting from our works. And to rest from our works means we aren’t trying to make ourselves righteous anymore. What a transformation that is of our mindset. How many of us still act as if we have to do things to earn our way through life and into God’s good books?
God showed us the way into rest. Creation takes six days and on the seventh day he rests. He steps back, he looks at it and he says, "This isn’t just good, it’s very good." We too should rest from our works that are our attempt to achieve righteousness and instead look at the work of Christ and say that is very good.
Jesus Christ who is the Lord of the Sabbath brings us our Sabbath rest. No more striving to be good. Instead, we strive to be His.
And that’s a completely different kind of striving because His yoke is easy, his burden is light. All we have to do is surrender our will, and say, "God, I’m going to trust you." And that is how we find our Sabbath rest.
Thank you, God, for the promised rest you have for us that is available now. We do not need to try and make ourselves good. You’ve already done that through Jesus. Bless your name. Amen.
