Our modern culture would be shocked and horrified by today’s verses on which we’re meditating. It’s 1 Corinthians 6, verses 9 to 10. Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived, neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, Nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Paul, immediately after this, says you’ve been washed and sanctified and cleansed by the blood of Christ. So we know that we are now righteous, even if we fall into one of these categories he’s just gone through. All of these various different sins, even if we commit them now, Jesus Christ’s blood is so powerful that it covers us against all unrighteousness.

But Paul is being very clear about the kind of behaviour that is associated with unrighteousness. This is not an exhaustive list, but it certainly gives us an idea of the kind of things that Christians should not be engaged in. It’s easy to pick out the big ones, the adultery, the theft, but what about idolatry. What is it that fully occupies our minds so that we’re no longer thinking about the things of God? Or what about being drunk? Do any of us ever get drunk? Tipsy? Giddy? Let the wine or beer cause us to do things against our better judgment? Are we revilers? Are we swindlers? Are we shortchanging people? These are not behaviours that God wants for his children.

So we thank you, Heavenly Father, that you have made it possible for us sinners, nevertheless, to be righteous and acceptable to you. But still, God, we don’t want to do things that displease our Father. Please help us. Please continue to change us. Please purify us. Please soften our hearts and cause us to be open to the direction of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
