Now we as Christians are not to seek revenge. Vengeance is God’s – he will repay. But I think there was a bit of a twinkle in God’s eye when he allowed this verse into the Bible. Proverbs 10 verse 7. The memory of the righteous is a blessing. But the name of the wicked will rot.

Isn’t that what we want to see? We love it when the villain gets his or her comeuppance. The name of the wicked is going to rot.

And this is, this is not just a prediction on the part of the writer of the proverb. It’s also an observation. We can observe, can we not? If we pluck two well known names out of history, Mother Teresa and Hitler which of those names has not fared well over the passage of time?

Hitler’s name has rotted, for the most part. Unless you believe some really strange things, Hitler is considered to be an absolute archetypal villain. His name has not aged well. It stinks.

And yet Mother Teresa, when we talk about her, we think of all the good that she did, all the people that passed under her care, whether or not she had some bad qualities, her name, the memory of that lady is a blessing.

And this is what we would hope for ourselves, is it not? Particularly as we head towards our later years. We want the memory of us to be a blessing. We don’t want our names to be a swear word later on after we’ve gone.

And this is the promise in the Bible, isn’t it? The memory of the righteous will be a blessing, the name of the wicked will rot. I know which one I’d rather be.

Lord God, we do want to be on the right side of this equation for the sake of your glory and the gospel God. Please continue to transform us. We want to be a blessing to our generation and to the generations to come. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
