Here’s a great proverb for all godly parents, teachers, aunts and uncles, grandparents, anyone who is involved in the life of a child. Proverbs 22 verse 6. Train up a child in the way he should go. Even when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Get them early. Get the Word of God into your children right now. Don’t wait until they’re old enough to choose for themselves what they want to read. Get them into the Word straight away. Every moment of Bible study is worthwhile for them.

And through the Word of God and through your godly direction, they will have the pathway set in their minds, in their behaviours, that will serve them well for their entire lives.

I often think about the Karate Kid film, you know, where the student is trained to repeat all these manoeuvres again and again, not really knowing why he’s doing them. And yet, those simple repeated manoeuvres are the means for him to defeat his enemies when he performs karate.

Our children may not know why we’re training them. They certainly won’t thank us for it when they’re children. But later on in life, I hope that your children will do as I do and thank my parents for giving me the right start, for showing me the right way, for teaching me about God and all that he asks of us.

We want our children to be fulfilled and happy, don’t we? This is the way to do it.

Lord God, please help us. Please help us all who have input into the life of a child to train them in the way that they should go, knowing that you are faithful. And when they are older, they won’t depart from that way. Thank you, precious God. Amen.
