In Luke, chapter 24, verse 49, Jesus says this, and let us really meditate on this to find out what it means for us. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.
Jesus is speaking to his disciples and he’s saying that he’s going to send that promise, the Holy Spirit, the guarantee of our salvation from God to them. Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to his disciples and he says, stay in the city, stay in the city until when? Until you’re clothed with power from on high.
Stay there. Wait for it. Don’t leave until you’ve got what you need. Don’t leave until you are equipped for the work of the gospel.
Stay in that city. Stay in that city faithfully praying, earnestly seeking God for that gift that you need, that we need to tell the world about Jesus.
So there’s a message to us there, isn’t there? But there’s also a promise. Behold, Jesus is sending that promise. Jesus is sending the Holy Spirit to us.
Are you filled with the Holy Spirit today, my friend? If you don’t feel that you are, ask for that. This is our inheritance. This is our promise from Jesus, our Saviour.
It wasn’t only for the apostles. We see the disciples laying hands on others and them receiving the Holy Spirit. This is a continual today thing. Let us seek God for the Holy Spirit, so that we are clothed with power from on high.
Lord God, we need you and we need everything that you are willing to give us. But in particular, the Holy Spirit, please clothe us with your power so that your work may be done in power on this earth. Amen.
