In today’s meditation we’re dropping straight into some dialogue among the chief priests and the Pharisees who’ve gathered the Council and this is what we hear them say in John 11 verse 48. If we let him go on like this everyone will believe in him and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.
So this has come straight after miracles, right? Jesus has just brought Lazarus back to life. If we let him go on like this, if we let him go on doing good things… They are really and truly saying they’d rather Jesus didn’t perform good miracles that people love, that are blessings to them.
They’d rather he didn’t do that, because they risk the Romans taking away their place and their nation. They feared what they had and where they lived being stripped away from them. That was what they were placing as of higher importance than salvation, than goodness, than healing.
What is of most importance to us? Is it to see God glorified? Most of us still have wickedness in our hearts, and at times that’s not our highest priority. Is it rather that we don’t want to lose our respectability, our position in a group, in the workplace, in church even.
This Jewish Council is not so far removed from us. We are still all prone to pursuing the wrong things. We must lay down everything that would oppose God’s work in us and in our communities.
God, please help us because truly, we are not always seeking your will first. Please help us to lay down those things that become more important than you because we know nothing is more important than you and your purposes. We need you. Have mercy on us. God. Amen.
