Right at the start of a list of several wise things that Paul says to the Colossian church, he says this. This is Colossians chapter 4 verse 2. Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

So we take that recommendation and we focus on how we apply it to our lives. What does it mean to us? This is our meditation today.

Continuing steadfastly in prayer. I’ve got to confess that I’m not very good at this. Prayer is not something that is always part of my daily habit. And it needs to be. And this is what Paul is saying.

Steadfast. We are never giving up praying. Regardless of what we perceive to be the outcome of prayer, we’re constantly talking to God. Being watchful in it, just like Jesus asked his disciples when he was in the garden of Gethsemane: "Watch with me while I pray."

And the last bit of advice, how we approach prayer is with thanksgiving. So we are anchoring our prayer in gratitude to God. When we pray to Him, we are always recognising who He is to us. He is our God. He is our King. He is the one who gave us life. He is the one who gave us salvation and freedom from sin.

And this, says Paul, is the hallmark of a healthy spiritual life. Continuing steadfastly in prayer, being watchful, and doing it with an attitude of thankfulness towards God.

Father God, we come before you once more saying we need your help to live this spiritual life in the way you would want for us. You are not a God who is imposing lots of rules on us. You are a God who lovingly knows what’s best for us. And it is best for us to talk to you, and it is best for us to remain grateful to you. So please help us and remind us, God, we want to honour you Amen.
