James 4, verse 7. Submit yourselves therefore to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James makes an excellent point, doesn’t he? He’s just said, in the verse before, God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. And then he says, submit yourselves therefore to God.
In humbleness and humility, we say, we’re doing things your way, God, we are recognising that you are supreme, we are not. We are not going to say any more like Adam and Eve, "We’re going to choose for ourselves what’s good and what’s bad." No, we’re saying, "God, it’s your way now."
And then this flows into a very, very simple point, that once we’re submitted to God, we can just resist the devil. There’s nothing he can do against the children of God when they are in full submission to their master, he isn’t just going to go, "Oh, I best give up then!" He’s going to be out of there. He’s going to flee.
He’s going to see a child of God on his knees on her knees before their Saviour going, "Lord, your way, only your way. You are glorious." And the devil can’t stand that. He wants to be worshipped. He wants the glory. He wants the praise and adoration that this world gives him day by day. But no, we are submitting to God.
We are receiving his grace because we are no longer proud. We are walking in humility and the devil just rebounds off us. Nothing he can do. We are safe.
This is not to say that nothing will go wrong in our lives. It is simply to say that the devil won’t be the cause anymore.
God, please help us to achieve that humility that is pleasing to you and that is deadly to our enemy, the devil. Thank you, God, that you give us the strength to resist. Amen.
