The Apostle Paul chooses his words very carefully when he writes this in Romans 6, 23. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

So all of us who are struggling and sinning and making really bad decisions, we are working to receive the very worst kind of pay. Imagine if you had done a full day’s work and your boss says to you at the end of the day, "Well done, now I’m going to kill you." That’s not a great exchange, is it? And that’s what we’re doing when we’re sinning. We are working towards our death.

And by contrast, Paul says, this free gift comes from God. It’s a free gift. We don’t even have to work at it. And the free gift is eternal life, and we get that through Jesus, as we know.

Why would we choose working towards our death over a free gift of life? I mean, it makes no sense, does it, when you put it that way, Paul?

So this is the really simple and clear message of the gospel. It makes me smile because God hasn’t exactly made it a difficult choice for us. And yet we make it difficult because for some reason we’d rather carry on sinning. Because the allure and the deception of sin makes us forget that it’s heading towards death.

And I don’t smile because there are many in that state. We need to show them the better choice, the free gift of God, eternal life in Jesus, eternal life, folks. Why would we not share that?

Lord God, thank you for guiding us towards a sensible choice, the choice of grace, a profoundly beautiful choice. Please help us to communicate the importance of this decision for those around us. Amen.
