Hebrews 12 verse 2: Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
In this meditation we are taking some time to look at Jesus, what he did and why he did it. Jesus didn’t just start Christianity, he perfects it. He was the ultimate example of what it was to be a Christian for us. And he sent his Holy Spirit to live in us, to grow and bear fruit, so that our faith would also be perfected.
And we see that he had horrific torture to endure. That it was not just that he was physically beaten and battered, he was spiritually abused too. He was ripped apart from God, from that perfect relationship. He was made a curse, he was brought to shame.
But the reason he did all that, the reason that he said to his Father not my will, but yours be done, was because of the joy that was coming: The joy set before him. The joy of defeating sin. The joy of restoring relationship between us and our creator. The joy of ultimately receiving his reward and crown, being at the right hand of God, in the place of greatest honour.
Oh, Lord God, thank you so much for sending your Son. Thank you for sending to us the Perfect. We treated him shamefully, we abused him, and for that we ask again your forgiveness. He is wonderful. Bless you, Father God. Amen.
