Psalm 119 verse 11 says, I have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Do we know how to live a life free of sin? If you’re anything like me, you’ll find yourself, I find myself, day by day, stumbling in areas that surprise and irritate me.

Why have I had these negative thoughts? Why have I not been completely kind and generous? Why do I fall so far short of the standards that Jesus displayed? I can’t answer all those questions other than say that my heart is not fully pure. But if I want to get out of some of these ruts, the Psalmist shows us how to do that.

The motivation here is to present a righteous life to God. And one of the ways that the Psalmist sees that this being possible, is to take in the Word of God, to store it in our hearts.

And one of the end goals here is that it will change us. And the motivation to obey and to please God out of our love for Him, which is driven by His love for us, that motivation causes us to take in more and more of His truth.

And the truth, the seed that’s planted in our heart, it changes our thoughts, it changes our behaviours, it changes our actions. This directs us towards righteous living. Not so that we can be justified by our actions before God, but simply because it pleases us to obey our Father.

Lord, thank you that you’ve given us your Word. Thank you that you’ve shown us the way. Thank you that we have a way to take these words into our lives through meditation. And Lord, please help us in this process to live clean, holy lives before you. Amen.
