Today’s meditation is on Matthew chapter 25, verse 40. And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, As you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, You did it to me.’ I remember a school song: " I was hungry and thirsty, were you there, were you there?"

And Jesus is saying that our acts of compassion, to those around us who may be more or less fortunate than us, we do those for Jesus. But more than that, he says, we do those to Jesus. He receives to himself our generous and kind and caring acts.

So, when we reach out to the poor, the homeless, the needy, we don’t just do that for Jesus, we are doing that as a service to our Lord. When we see others who are hungry and thirsty, are we there? Do we give generously from what God has given us? Or do we live in fear and concern that we might run out of the provisions that we hold?

We are the chosen and called by God, whose purposes guard our entire lives and our afterlife. And so how easy it can be for us to say, Lord, the things you’ve put in my hands, I release back to you.

Lord, please help us to remember who it is we’re serving as we live our lives. Please fill us with compassion and generosity. And please take away from us the fear that we will in some way be harmed by these acts of charity. Amen.
